The Portuguese parliament on Friday has approved a new law allowing people to change their legal gender from the age of 16, without requiring a medical report.
According to a count by the Assembly of the Republic, 109 votes were in favour compared to 106 against.
Between the age of 16 and 18, the change of gender will need to be approved by their parents or legal representatives
The new Portuguese legislation also prohibits, “except in situations of proven health risk,” surgical or pharmacological interventions involving changes in the body or sexual characteristics of intersex infants and children.
It now needs to be signed by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to come into effect.
